My favorite games that can be played with as few as 2 are Setback (a.k.a. Pitch) and Rummy 500. Blackjack and Poker are two more to consider.

Also, you must have missed this when I posted it in another thread - www.pagat.com/

interesting, i didnt know pitch could be two player. ill have to try that out. :-)

(speaking of pitch, that is THE only game i know of where anyone can trump at any time, even if they could follow suit. weirdness.)

yep, mustve missed the link, but im currently checking it out. good stuff.

Setback is great. If you're playing two player and you get a bit bored, try playing the draw variation. In Draw Setback, the rules are the same as regular Setback until after the bidding is concluded. The winning bidder then declares what suit is trump. Both players discard all cards that are _not_ trump and then draw new cards until they have six cards again. The game then resumes normal play, except for one more twist. On the first turn, the winning bidder does _not_ have to lead off with a trump card.

Gin rummy and cribbage are both great games that require skill to play well.

One of the things I like about Gin Rummy is that it has a read-your-opponent aspect to it, like Poker. It makes a great gambling game because of that.

I just saw the scene at the first of Goldfinger where Goldfinger's cheating at Gin by having a sexy blonde spy with binoculars from a hotel room and radio what his oppnent holds in his hand. They were playing for thousands of bucks.

I like the scoring variation of Oklahoma Gin (ten cards to each player, next card face up determines maximum points player can go down with and if up card is spade, points are doubled.)

I play a two-handed Euchre. From what I've seen in rule books, there are a few variations of it. The one I know has 4 [cards] down, 4 up and 5 in the hand. Basically the 8 cards on the table take on the role of what a 'partner' does in four-handed Euchre, providing opportunities for strategy.
